Seven Things to Look for in
Selecting A Divorce Attorney
Selecting a divorce attorney is one of the most challenging parts of the divorce process. That's why I've put together a checklist for some of the things you should look for in your family lawyer.
First in selecting a divorce attorney, you want someone who is knowledgeable . Ask potential family attorneys where they went to law school, if they passed the bar on their first attempt, and what kind of continuing legal education they pursue. Not only should your Riverside or San Bernardino family law attorney have a great academic background, he or she should continue to stay on top of all of the latest developments in family law.
Second, you want a skilled attorney . You need someone who can handle all of the aspects of a case. Your attorney needs outstanding trial skills so that when he goes in front of the Judge, he can passionately argue your case. But he also needs to be able to handle the more delicate aspects of negotiation and mediation. Finally, he must be able to write persuasive legal arguments -- because much of the court's decisions are based on the written motions.
Third, when you start selecting a divorce attorney, make sure he is passionate. This can't just be a 9-5 job for your lawyer. It has to be a passion. Your Riverside or San Bernardino family lawyer must want to put your interests ahead of everything.
Fourth, your attorney should be compassionate . Studies have shown that going through a divorce is actually more stressful than loosing a spouse to death. When selecting your attorney, you need to look for someone who understands that you are going through the hardest time in your life and who can help you put the legal process in perspective.
Fifth, you need someone who fights for justice . It's easy to get walked all over in the family law system. Some Riverside and San Bernardino family law attorneys are willing to let that happen to their clients because it's easier to push paper than to fight. You need an advocate who is on your side and is willing to fight for justice.
Sixth, if your case involves custody, when selecting a divorce attorney, you want a lawyer who cares about kids. Too many times, children are the victims of divorce. You want someone who is as dedicated to protecting your kids as much as possible from the ravages of divorce court.
Seventh, you need an attorney who will protect your pocketbook . Let's face it -- attorneys are expensive. The good ones charge $300 an hour and up. They bill you for everything they do. So, you know going in that divorce litigation is expensive. But, you don't want an attorney who is going to run up your bill needlessly. In selecting your attorney, you need to understand how he bills and what the projected cost of your case will be.
